baking powder
½
teaspoon
salt
¼
cup
sugar
⅓
cup
cold unsalted butter
cut into small pieces
½
cup
milk
1
large egg
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir just until combined (don't overmix!).
Drop the dough by rounded spoonfuls onto the baking sheet.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
Transfer scones to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Keep it cool:
Cold butter is key to flaky scones.
Don't overwork it:
Overmixing the dough will result in tough scones.
